About Other History Resources
Several historical documents are contained on this link:
This was an official history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints written
by John Whitmer between 1831 and 1838. John Whitmer was appointed to "write and
keep a regular history" by revelation in March of 1831 (D&C 47). Whitmer was later disfellowshipped by the
church at Far West, Missouri, in March of 1838. After his disfellowshipment, the First
Presidency called on him for the records, but he refused to give them up. Nine decades
later in 1924, after John Whitmers death, the records were sold by his nephew to the
RLDS church, along with the 1830 printer's manuscript of the Book of Mormon (which had
been in the possession of his brother, David).
John Whitmer continued writing in this history after his official appointment as church
historian ended in 1838. The rest of this book may be viewed at the RLDS Library/Archives
in Independence, Missouri, or in one of several published sources extant. What is
presented here is most likely how the record looked when the First Presidency called for
it in 1839.
This is a history of the Smith family and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints up to 1845, written by Lucy Mack Smith who was the mother of the Prophet Joseph
Smith Jr. It's original title was "Biographical Sketches of Joseph Smith the
Prophet and His Progenitors for Many Generations".
The Prophet Joseph Smith III wrote his own memoirs of his early life in Nauvoo and his
experiences as prophet of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
These were first published as a series of articles in the Saints Herald from 1934 to 1937,
and later printed in bound form as a book. The Memoirs available on Centerplace are
reprints from the issues from the Saints Herald. More issues will be made available in the
coming weeks.
Written by Inez Smith Davis, daughter of church historian Heman C. Smith, this volume has been a beloved work of history for several generations. It summarizes in one volume the history from the beginning of the Restoration, through the Reorganization. This is a reprint of the 5th edition printed by the RLDS Church in 1955.
